RFA: Epidemiologic Research on Health Effects of Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Particulate Matter and Other Air Pollutants (2003) RFA Text | Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , Human Health , Particulate Matter , Air
Objective:
The goals of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution Study are to: 1) prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposure (including PM2.5 and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multi-city, multi-ethnic cohort; and 2) prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
Progress Summary:
During the ninth year of MESA Air, the research team has:
- Finalized a unified exposure prediction model that uses consistent data inputs and computer code to generate likelihood-based ambient outdoor exposure predictions for all of our primary air pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), oxides of nitrogen (both NOX and NO2), and light absorbing, or black, carbon (BC).
- Developed models of individual-level exposure to PM2.5 of ambient origin that incorporate information on residential infiltration rates and individual patterns of time-location, which also can be used in health analysis.
- Created several health-related datasets for use in health analysis, including coronary artery calcium (CAC) and intima-medial thickness (IMT) measures, and inflammatory markers.
- Continued to collect data on clinical cardiovascular disease events.
- Furthered our understanding of the complex interplay between air pollution, socioeconomic and demographic factors and health, and published several new studies describing these relationships.
- Published several new manuscripts describing our exposure modeling work and intermediate health analyses, and have begun drafting the manuscripts that will describe our primary analyses of the relationship between air pollution exposure and subclinical atherosclerosis.
Future Activities:
During the final year of MESA Air, we intend to publish major study results, including the main analysis of the effects of air pollution exposure on progression of atherosclerosis as assessed by repeated measurements of coronary artery calcium and carotid intima-medial thickness. We also intend to publish the results of analyses of several other air pollution-health outcome relationships, papers describing aspects of our exposure modeling process, and results of additional analyses that evaluate the interplay between socioeconomic status, air pollution, neighborhood characteristics and health. In addition, we will continue to extend the temporal coverage of our air pollution exposure predictions as additional regulatory monitoring becomes available. We also will continue to incorporate additional residential locations captured by ongoing MESA follow-up calls, and will utilize the update of the residential history questionnaire occurring on Follow Up Call 14 to verify and correct any errors in previous residential locations.
