Objective:
The objective of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Air study is to prospectively examine the relation between an individual-level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures (including fine particulate matter and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multicity, multiethnic cohort. The MESA Air study also will prospectively examine the relation between an individual-level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
Progress Summary:
Work efforts in Year 2 of the MESA Air project concentrated on recruiting individuals into the study and initiating air pollution monitoring in the communities of the study participants and at their homes. Activities included:
- Recruitment of participants from the main MESA cohort, the MESA Family cohort, and de novo recruits from California and New York.
- Collection of health outcomes on subclinical cohort including coronary computed tomography (CT), aortic CT, ultrasound, and questionnaires.
- Establishment of fixed air sampling sites and continuous sampling at all Field Center locations.
- Monitoring indoor and outdoor locations at participant homes.
- Sampling of traffic-related gases simultaneously throughout each MESA Air community
- Completion of an internal data quality audit.
- Presentation of project status and discussion regarding existing issues with our External Scientific Advisory Committee in January 2005.
Future Activities:
Recruitment activities and new health examinations will continue through the spring of 2007. Event and exposure follow-up questionnaires also will be conducted via telephone throughout the year. Air pollution monitoring will continue at all of our existing fixed sites as well as new and existing home sites. Personal monitoring also will commence in all of the study areas, and the final two rounds of the community co-pollutant sampling will be completed. Based on the exposure monitoring results, work will be conducted on the spatio-temporal model to create preliminary exposure estimates.
