Objective:

The goal of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution Study (MESA Air) is to prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposure (including PM2.5 and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multi-city, multi-ethnic cohort. MESA Air will also prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.

Progress Summary:

Work efforts in the fourth year of MESA Air concentrated on completing the residential and personal air monitoring campaigns, cleaning and conducting quality assurance procedures on all exposure data, developing individual level interim exposure estimates, and conducting follow-up phone calls to all participants. Specifically:

  • 86% of all MESA Air participants have been contacted for the first MESA Air follow up call (MESA Follow-Up 8). Of these participants, 12.4% have had life changes that have triggered readministration of the Air Questionnaire. To date, Air Questionnaires have been completed for 74% of those triggered.
  • Clinical events data is available for all MESA Air participants recruited through the main MESA study.
  • Biweekly fixed site air monitoring continues at between 3 and 7 MESA Air sites per city, for a total of 26 locations. To date, we have collected over 1,900 samples from these sites.
  • Infiltration monitoring is complete. More than 1000 outdoor and 800 indoor residential samples were collected. Complete infiltration sampling, including two two-week paired indoor and outdoor samples from two distinct seasons, were collected at 383 unique residential locations.
  • Personal monitoring is complete. A total of 174 personal monitoring samples were collected, and 85 participants provided two two-week samples during each of two distinct seasons.
  • We have developed individual-level interim exposure estimates for all MESA Air participants. These estimates demonstrate a range of concentrations from 9.6 – 26.3 μg/m3, and demonstrate both between- and within-city variability.
  • We discussed project status and existing issues with our External Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) at our annual meeting in February 2008.

Future Activities:

Throughout the next year, we will complete the majority of the second MESA Air follow-up questionnaire (MESA Follow-Up 9). We will continue to work closely with MESA Air ancillary studies that will expand the scope of MESA Air—including those on PM components and sources and on coarse PM. We will continue fixed site monitoring throughout the year, and conclude that effort in July 2009. We will use our newly developed interim exposure estimates to examine the relationship between progression of atherosclerosis and air pollution, and will continue to publish manuscripts describing our findings. We will also continue to support the submission of ancillary study proposals and the use of MESA Air as a platform for such research.
