Objective:
The goal of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution Study (MESA Air) is to prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposure (including PM2.5 and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multi-city, multiethnic cohort. MESA Air will also prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
Progress Summary:
Work efforts in the third year of MESA Air concentrated on completing subject recruitment, completing health exams, collecting air samples at participants’ homes and within their communities, building a geographic database, developing statistical models, and creating a publications strategy. Specifically:
- Recruitment into MESA Air was completed. A total of 6,226 participants have consented to participate, and are being followed for health status and clinical events.
- The clinical exams that will serve as baseline for the prospective study have concluded, including New Recruit baseline exams. 3,716 participants are included in the group to be followed with coronary CT and ultrasound, with a follow-up examination scheduled for 2010-2012.
- Fixed site air monitoring continues at between 3 and 7 MESA Air sites per city, for a total of 27 locations. To date, we have collected over 1,400 samples from these sites.
- We completed air sampling of gaseous air pollutants (primarily traffic-related) during each of 3 distinct seasons in each community.
- More than 700 inside and outside samples have been collected at participants’ homes. Over 130 monitoring samples from participants have been collected.
- Precise geographic locations have been assigned to most of our participants’ residential locations, and traffic volumes and other exposure-related factors are being estimated near these locations.
- Data from all these sources are being integrated into a unified exposure model.
Future Activities:
Throughout the next year, we will conclude the major planned exposure monitoring campaigns (with the exception of ongoing fixed site monitoring), including home indoor/outdoor and personal monitoring. Event and exposure follow-up questionnaires will also be conducted via telephone throughout the year. We will continue to work closely with MESA Air ancillary studies that will expand the scope of MESA Air – including those on particulate matter components and sources, and on coarse particulate matter. Our spatial-temporal modeling will become a focus of attention and energy, and we will be able to compare exposure estimates resulting from our initial modeling efforts with interim health results.
