Objective:
The UC Berkeley Center for Children’s Environmental Health Research is a community-university partnership investigating the environment and health of primarily low-income, Latino children living in the Salinas Valley, an agricultural community in Monterey County, California. Partners in this project include the local and State health departments and environmental agencies, community clinics and advocates, farmworkers, and representatives of the agricultural industry. The last 5 years have focused on the CHAMACOS birth cohort study of pesticide and allergen exposures and their potential affects on growth, neurodevelopment and respiratory disease in young children. For the next 5 years, we will continue to assess exposures and health outcome in these children through age 7. We will also conduct specialized pesticide exposure studies to improve our understanding of pesticide metabolism and excretion during the pregnancy and birth, identify the best samples to characterize exposures for epidemiologic studies, and evaluate the contribution of diet to total pesticide exposure in young children. We will also conduct innovative in-vitro laboratory studies investigating cell responses to mixed exposures of pesticides and allergens. Finally we will develop a Community Outreach and Translation Core (COTC) to ensure that study findings are widely disseminated to local, regional, and national audiences so that appropriate policy responses to improve children’s health are supported.
Approach:
The Health and Exposure studies will continue to focus on the children of the 601 pregnant women enrolled in 1999 and 2000. We will assess pesticide and allergen/respiratory irritant exposures to approximately 400 children currently enrolled in the study through age 7. Exposure and neurodevelopment assessments will be completed when the children are 42, 60, and 84 months of age. The laboratory studies will involve exposing cultured lymphocytes collected when the children were 24 months old to pesticides used in the Salinas Valley and respiratory irritants such as endotoxin. The cell mediated inflammatory response will be measured to determine if mixed exposures act synergistically, additively, or antagonistically. Finally, we will develop and work with a Farmworker and Grower Council and our community partners to disseminate findings to our community and develop educational, intervention, and outreach programs to prevent exposures to children and support policy changes that protect their health
Expected Results:
The products of Center activities will reflect the broad, multi-disciplinary nature of the planned activities. Findings from scientific studies will address key data gaps on pesticide exposures and their health effects in young children. These data will be valuable for implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act and increasing understanding about the vulnerability of children to environmental exposures. The Community Outreach and Translation activities will ensure that study findings are appropriately translated into meaningful information for our community and research partners and result in specific improvements in policies protecting children’s health. More broadly, products and programs resulting from our education, outreach, and intervention will provide model material for statewide efforts to improve the environmental health of pregnant women and children.
