Research Category: Children's Health , Human Health
Objective:
The Fox River Environment and Diet Study (FRIENDS) Children’s Environmental Health Center was established to investigate the health effects of combined exposure to PCBs and MeHg in Hmong and Lao refugees consuming contaminated fish from the Fox River in northeastern Wisconsin. The objectives of the FRIENDS Center are to: (1) study the impact of PCB and MeHg exposure on women’s reproductive health and child development; (2) develop effective educational strategies to reduce exposure; and (3) conduct laboratory studies aimed at understanding the mechanisms through which these contaminants induce neurological deficits in children.
Progress Summary:
The accomplishments of the Center are described in the individual 2005 Annual Reports for the FRIENDS Center projects:
R829390C001: Neurobehavioral Effects of PCBs and Methylmercury in Rats.
R829390C002: Perinatal PCB Exposure and Neurophysical/Auditing Function.
R829390C003: FRIENDS Analytical Toxicology Core Facility.
R829390C004: Development Effects of PCB and Methylmercury.
Future Activities:
See the individual 2005 Annual Reports for R829390C001 through R829390C004 for future activities.
