Objective:
The goals of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution Study (MESA Air) are: 1) to prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposure (including PM2.5 and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multi-city, multi-ethnic cohort; and 2) to prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
Progress Summary:
During the eighth year of MESA Air, the research team has:
- Developed likelihood-based exposure models for PM2.5, NOx and NO2 concentrations across the MESA Air study regions, and produced ambient exposure predictions for these pollutants for each MESA Air participant at 2-week resolution from 1999-2011.
- Developed a likelihood-based exposure model for light absorbing carbon (LAC) that predicts long-term LAC concentration from 2006-2008 across the MESA Air study regions.
- Employed season-specific infiltration models to generate residence-specific ambient-source indoor PM2.5 concentrations for each participant using residential history information obtained from the MESA Air Questionnaire.
- Calculated individual-level exposure to ambient-source PM2.5 by time-weighting indoor and outdoor concentrations using participant-specific patterns of time-location.
- Collaborated with MESA investigators to successfully complete MESA Exam 5, which included 4,859 MESA Air participants. Of these, 96% completed MESA Air Questionnaires.
- Supported the acquisition and interpretation of 3,624 carotid ultrasounds and 3,484 CT scans, representing 100% and 97%, respectively, of the study goals.
- Published several key manuscripts, including a major overview paper describing the MESA Air cohort and methodology, method papers describing the infiltration modeling and a new spatially weighted scoring system for coronary artery calcium measurements, and a health analysis of the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and vascular response.
Future Activities:
During the next project period, we will complete the analysis of the relationship between air pollutants and subclinical progression of atherosclerosis, as measured by coronary artery calcium and intima-medial thickness, using the full 10-year period of progression, from MESA Exam 1 to Exam 5. We will update our exposure models with new AQS air monitoring data as they are released, and will continue to acquire information on participants’ residential locations, residential characteristics, and time-location patterns for those participants who move or have other significant life changes. This information will be collected as part of the MESA follow-up phone calls. We also will begin our analysis of clinical events, including development of our clinical events analysis plan and finalization of our clinical events dataset.
