Objective:
The general aim of the project is to determine if long-term exposure to airborne particles is related to the development of atherosclerosis. The objectives are to examine: (1) the relationship between long-term exposure to air particles and the prevalence of subclinical atherosclerotic disease after controlling for established cardiovascular risk factors and key copollutants; (2) if established cardiovascular risk factors modify the relation between long-term exposure to airborne particles and prevalence of subclinical disease; (3) if associations between long-term exposure and atherosclerosis are similar in different race/ethnic groups; and (4) associations between current and recent exposure to air particles and inflammatory markers (a potential biologic mechanism linking air particle exposure to atherosclerosis).
Progress Summary:
The third year of the project has focused on the development of the multiple imputation models for historical PM10 and PM2.5 exposures and the construction of cumulative exposure measures for study participants. We have initiated analyses of long-term exposures in relation to subclinical atherosclerosis. We also have completed two manuscripts: one on acute exposures and inflammatory markers (published in the American Journal of Epidemiology) and a second manuscript on PM exposures and microalbuminuria, which currently is being reviewed by Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) co-authors.
Future Activities:
- Finalize and submit for publication manuscript on space-time modeling of historical data.
- Finalize and submit for publication manuscript on long-term exposures and subclinical atherosclerosis.
- Complete data analyses with blood pressure and vascular stiffness as outcomes.
