Objective:
The goal of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution Study (MESA Air) is to prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposure (including PM2.5 and gaseous co-pollutants) and the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease in a multi-city, multi-ethnic cohort. MESA Air will also prospectively examine the relation between an individual level assessment of long-term ambient air pollution exposures and the incidence of cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
Progress Summary:
During the fifth year of MESA Air, the research team has:
· Successfully concluded all exposure monitoring, including ending sampling at the fixed sites—a total of 6,470 active samples (measuring PM2.5, light absorbing carbon, and metals) and 8,886 passive samples (measuring NO, NO2, NOX, and SO2) were deployed, and all study Data Quality Objectives were met
· Completed the first MESA Air followup call (MESA Followup 8), and made significant progress on the next two followup calls (Followups 9 and 10)—99% of MESA Air participants were called during Followup 8, and Air Questionnaires were readministered on 12% (due to reported residence or life changes). To date, 78% of MESA Air participants have been called as part of Followup 9; Air Questionnaires were readministered on 9%.
· Planned for the integration of MESA Air activities into the next clinic visit (MESA Exam 5, 4/2010-10/2011),
· Predicted infiltration factors based on indoor and outdoor monitoring and questionnaire responses and used these models to estimate indoor air concentrations at all MESA Air participants’ homes.
· Utilized individual-level data on self-reported time-location patterns to weight individual exposures between estimated indoor and outdoor concentrations.
· Observed relationships between individual-level estimates of air pollution exposure and novel health outcomes, including left ventricular mass.
Future Activities:
During the next reporting period, we will finalize all questionnaires and protocols for MESA Exam 5, including the CT and Ultrasound scanning protocols and revisions to the Air Questionnaire. We will conduct in-person training sessions for the Exam 5 sonographers and for the MESA interviewers who will administer the Air Questionnaire in Exam 5. This next reporting year will include 4 of the 18 exam months, and we hope to conduct approximately 800 CTs and Ultrasounds during these months. During this next reporting period, we will continue to refine and improve our outdoor exposure estimates, including new variables such as traffic counts and dispersion modeling results, and to finalize our infiltration estimates for all six cities. We also intend to integrate our revised outdoor estimates with our infiltration estimates for each participant using reported time-location data from the Air Questionnaires. We will use these new personal-level estimates to examine the relationship between cardiovascular disease and air pollution, and will continue to public manuscripts describing our findings. We will also continue to support the submission of ancillary study proposals and the use of MESA Air as a platform for such research.
