Objective:
The Northwest Research Center for Particulate Air Pollution and Health integrates the efforts of a multidisciplinary team of scientists with expertise in environmental exposure assessment, toxicology, epidemiology, and biostatistics, whose combined efforts will address critical aspects of the health effects related to particulate matter (PM) air pollution. The theme of this Center is combustion-derived fine particulate composition, exposures, and health effects. Atmospheric fine particulate components vary regionally as a result of climate, industry, and resources. The main objectives of this research project are to elucidate the relationships among ambient air quality, population exposures, and population health, and to study these regional differences as a strategic approach to uncovering causative agents and mechanisms of effect. Our objectives will provide crucial information to understanding and preventing PM-associated health effects.
The Northwest Research Center for Particulate Air Pollution and Health is assisted by four resource service cores: Health Effects, Exposure, Statistics Data, and Biomarker. These cores each provide expertise, services, and resources to assist projects and to maximize the cross-project benefits of shared data and methods.
Progress Summary:
Health Effects Resource Core (Joel Kaufman). During Year 3 of the project, the Health Effects Core took the lead on analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) and systemic markers of inflammation and thrombosis in serum. The core has purchased instrumentation for collection of breath condensate and new portable spirometers. The objective of this core is to provide epidemiological and medical consultation for all Center activities and investigators. An additional objective is to acquire and maintain appropriate health testing equipment for evaluating respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes.
Exposure Core (Timothy V. Larson, Lee-Jane Sally Liu). The Exposure Core has coordinated construction of the controlled exposure facility, including testing and troubleshooting systems. This core also has been active in data processing and manuscript preparation. The core has assisted the Health Effects group with exhaled NO measurement protocols and has assisted in preparation of size distribution time-series data for use in the panel studies analyses. Finally, the Exposure Core has collected size-resolved particles using Chem-Vol for subsequent extraction and testing in the mouse assay. Timothy Larson is conducting various source apportionment estimations using data from the Seattle air agency, from our panel studies, and from the Spokane PM Health Effects study.
Statistics Data Core (Lianne Sheppard,Thomas Lumley). The Statistics Data Core has continued with its objectives of supporting project data needs, utilizing existing data for analyses of health effects, providing statistical consultation and analysis services for projects, and statistical methods development, which is a new endeavor of Year 3 of the project. The Statistics Data Core has the responsibility to provide adequate staff to meet Center needs and to assign individual biostatisticians to specific projects based on requests. The Statistics Data Core has taken a more proactive role in study planning, data analyses, and methods development.
Biomarker Core (David Kalman). The Biomarker Core is a new resource set up at the beginning of Year 3 of the project to allow better tracking of biomarker research that had been included in the Exposure Core. The Biomarker Core is responsible for quality control and oversight of urine and filter samples used to establish the validity of a urinary biomarker for exposure to wood smoke and for oversight of breath condensate analyses. Chris Simpson is the staff member in charge of day-to-day activities. The compounds we are evaluating as possible urinary biomarkers for wood smoke exposure are a family of methoxylated phenols and a sugar, levoglucostan. Urine samples were collected in panel studies in Years 1, 2, and 3 of the project, and in the forest fire study in the summer of Year 3 of the project. Analysis for these compounds is expensive; our protocol has been to identify subjects with the highest PM2.5 exposures and analyze those filters and urine samples on a priority basis. Keeping up with sample analysis is a challenge for this core.
Future Activities:
We will continue our research in the four core areas: Health Effects, Exposure, Statistics Data, and Biomarker.
