Abstract Four approaches were used to study the ecologic impact of drawdown and storage of water behind dams for flood control and power on wildlife population changes in the Snake River canyon, Southeast Washington. The first involved availability of aquatic macroinvertebrates as a potential food source for waterfowl. The second was to record changes in relative numbers and distribution of vertebrate animals as a result of flooding riparian habitat. The third involved seasonal trapping of small mammals along 21 transects. The fourth approach involved information on hunter-killed game animals collected in the study area during fall hunting seasons to supplement data obtained by counting animals on the 21 transects.
