Objective:
Investigate the potential impact on public health brought about by emerging alternatives for rehabilitating drinking water distribution systems.
Progress Summary:
We conducted a controlled experiment in which a single source water was disinfected with chlorine or chloramines with and without Br−/I− to measure the toxic effects of these halogens. We disinfected filter effluent from a conventional surface water treatment plant with 2 mg/L of free chlorine or combined chlorine with or without the addition of 500 µg/L Br− and 100 µg/L I− at pH 8-8.5. After 48 h reaction time, we concentrated the disinfected water samples by adsorption over XAD-2/XAD-8 resins. Water disinfected with chlorine was less cytotoxic than water disinfected with chloramine; however, both disinfectants alone generated the same level of genotoxicity in the source water. For both chlorination and chloramination, the addition of Br− and I− increased cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. These data indicate that the halide content of source water substantially affects the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of finished drinking water and this factor should be considered in decisions involving disinfection practice.
