Objective:

To provide epidemiological and medical consultation for all Center activities and investigators. A further goal is to acquire and maintain appropriate health testing equipment for evaluating respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes.

Progress Summary:

The Health Core continues to support other research projects in the Center. During Year 4, we took a principal role in the design and execution of a study of the effects of agricultural burning in young asthmatics in Eastern Washington. The Health Core also supported development of testable hypotheses and protocols for studies in the new controlled exposure facility.

Future Activities:

During Year 4 of the project, the Health Core took the lead on analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) and systemic markers of inflammation and thrombosis in serum. The core has acquired new equipment for assessment of exhaled nitric oxide in human subjects for ongoing studies. During the upcoming year we will finalize and submit manuscripts from the panel study related to Heart Rate Variability, systemic markers of inflammation and thrombosis in serum, and pediatric lung function. We will complete analysis of the results of the agricultural burning health effects study. We will continue to support development of protocols in the new controlled exposure facility.
