Project Period: April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2020
Project Period Covered by this Report: April 1, 2015 through March 31,2016
Project Amount: $25,000,000
RFA: Health Effects Institute (2015) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air

Objective:

To support research on the health effects of emissions from motor vehicles, fuels and other sources of environmental pollution. Themes guiding the research program are Continuing Challenges of Multipollutant Science, Accountability and Transparency, Assessing Emerging Fuels and Technologies, and Global Health Science.

Progress Summary:

During the past year under award CR83590201, the Health Effects Institute (HEI) has:

  • Launched three comprehensive and rigorous new studies of the effects of low levels of exposure to air pollution in a set of large and detailed population cohorts.
  • Published and widely disseminated HEI Special Report 19, Diesel Emissions and Lung Cancer: An Evaluation of Recent Epidemiological Evidence for Quantitative Risk Assessment, and the Executive Summary of The Advanced Collaborative Emissions Study (ACES).
  • Completed all exposures and analysis for HEI’s Multicenter Ozone Study in Older Subjects (MOSES) and entered the final report into HEI's intensive and independent review process.
  • Highlighted ongoing research at the widely attended HEI Annual Conference in April (where the new ACES Centers also were announced).

Future Activities:

Looking ahead, HEI expects to make major progress in Year Two of the grant, including:

  • Completing review and publication of the MOSES study, as well as studies on mechanisms of health effects and other topics.
  • Completing data collection and analysis of HEI's current traffic exposure studies and receiving reports for review.
  • Completing the second wave of accountability studies at the national and regional scale and studying port areas.
  • Holding a workshop on fuel composition and particulate matter in late 2016.
  • Launching key efforts for HEI's next major research initiative—of new studies of traffic and health—with an expert workshop in May 2016 and an RFA to be issued early in 2017.

In addition, with additional funding from other sources, HEI plans to continue its efforts regarding its Energy Research Program and its involvement in the Global Burden of Disease project regarding the burden attributed to ambient air pollution, including the launch of a State of Global Air website.
