Objective:
HEI has built its application based on significant progress under the HEI Application/Strategic Plan for 2010 – 2015. This Application is built around the overarching theme: Informing Air Quality and Climate Technology Decisions for 2015 – 2020…and Beyond.” This theme is integrated into four core program elements: the Continuing Challenges of Multipollutant Science; Accountability and Transparency; Assessing Emerging Fuels and Technologies; and Global Health Science. In each of these areas, HEI has described detailed plans for its research and other scientific activities, including: (1) Completing and communicating the results of key studies on ozone and cardiovascular effects, traffic exposure, diesel, accountability, and other important topics; (2) Launching major new research initiatives including, among others: examining potential effects at lower levels of exposure; new targeted studies of the health effects of traffic exposure; the next generation of accountability studies of major air quality actions; and, with additional funds, new source-specific assessment of air pollution health impacts in developing countries; (3) Targeted Scientific Review and Synthesis, including an updated review of the effects of exposure to traffic, and development of systematic toxicity testing protocols, and workshops on key issues pertaining to emerging fuels and technologies; and (4) Pursuing, across our work, important cross-cutting issues in all of our efforts, including innovation and testing of statistical analysis and modeling approaches; at-risk populations; climate change; enhanced exposure assessment; new biologic techniques; and new health endpoints. The HEI Application also includes flexibility to anticipate and act on the unanticipated events that may call for HEI’s expertise during the project period. The outcomes of the proposed research and review activities are anticipated to respond to several key needs in frontier areas of environmental sciences and decision making, including multi-pollutant science, accountability, new fuels and technologies, and global health.
