Project Period: January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2015 (Extended to December 31, 2016)
RFA: Clean Air Research Centers (2009) RFA Text | Recipients Lists
Research Category: Human Health , Air
Objective:
The main aim of this project is to determine the health effects of prenatal and postnatal exposures to individual pollutants, sources, and pollutant mixtures on somatic growth, cardiovascular risk (blood pressure, exercise tolerance) and cognition in children. The strength of chronic and acute effects of individual pollutants will vary by source and mixture, as well as the timing of prenatal and postnatal exposures. Increased vulnerability or susceptibility to pollution effects on these adverse health outcomes will also result from socioeconomic disparities, stress and violence, environmental tobacco smoke, and reduced maternal and child omega-3 fatty acid intake measured in the prenatal as well as postnatal periods. Our Advisory Committee recommended including asthma as an outcome, and evaluating genetic variants as sources for susceptibility.
Summary/Accomplishments (Outputs/Outcomes):
We have demonstrated and have published findings on chronic (and for some outcomes, short term) effects of individual pollutants, sources and pollutant mixtures on birth weight, blood pressure, neurocognitive, and behavioral outcomes in children from Project Viva. We have also demonstrated chronic effects of pollutants on early life respiratory infection, wheeze, lung function and development of asthma. We have investigated and have reported findings regarding potential effect modifers including socioeconomic status, stress, tobacco smoke and nutrients, including vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. We have found local pollution effects on maternal glucose control during pregnancy and are investigating effects on blood pressure trajectories and preeclampsia risk. We have evaluated intermediate inflammatory outcomes in the child, and their relation to pollutant exposures; a doctoral candidate Jill Hahn is currently completing an analysis on prenatal pollutant exposures and cytokine production at birth. Dr. Joanne Sordillo is evaluating mixtures of environmental exposures in early life, including pollutants, and their long-term effects on airway inflammation in the children. Dr. Abby Fleisch and her student are looking at combined effects of chemical toxicants and pollution on cardiometabolic outcomes, and are investigating effects of pollutants and their sources on growth trajectories. Dr. Mary Rice has a paper in submission demonstrating life-time pollution effects on asthma development that differ by sex. We have collaborated closely with all of the other Cores and Projects, and have published collaboratively with the entire Center team. We have now extended our Center work within the new nation-wide ECHO birth cohort initiative.
Conclusions:
Prenatal and postnatal exposures to individual pollutants, sources, and pollutant mixtures have long-term effects on somatic growth, cardiovascular risk (blood pressure, exercise tolerance) and cognition in children. The strength of chronic and acute effects of individual pollutants vary by source and mixture, as well as the timing of prenatal and postnatal exposures.
