Abstract The study determined the feasibility of conducting a full-scale demonstration to document the effectiveness of land reclamation at mined-out areas in establishing surface water infiltration control to prevent acid mine water pollution. The study site was the Dents Run Watershed, Monongalia County, West Virginia. Investigative measures included: investigation of each mine area and opening; a detailed description of each site; sampling and analysis of all receiving streams and discharge points to determine the severity of acid mine water pollution; and evaluation and selection of weir structures, monitor enclosures and instruments to be placed in unattended areas to provide a continuous record of stream conditions. Recommendations and cost estimates are presented for reclamation at each site and for the installation of monitoring facilities. (Author Modified Abstract)
