Abstract |
The 26.6-acre Dixie Oil Processors (DOP) site is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Houston. Between 1969 and 1978, the DOP North parcel operated as a copper recovery and hydrocarbon washing facility. Six surface impoundments were used to store copper wastewater and wastewater from the hydrocarbon washing operation prior to recovery and treatment. In 1978, DOP began operations on the South parcel of the site, including: regeneration of cuprous chloride catalyst; hydrocarbon washing to produce ethylbenzene, toluene, aromatic solvents and styrene pitch; oil recovery; and blending and distilling chemical residues to produce fuel oil, creosote extender and molybdenum concentrate catalyst. The North parcel wastes were disposed of onsite in tanks, drums, and waste pits. Sampling indicates contamination of surface and subsurface soils and shallow ground water. The selected remedial actions for the site are discussed. The estimated present worth costs of the remedy is $241,000. |
