Abstract | Three field spreading methods and a lagoon system were evaluated for the disposal of dairy-cow waste. Runoff water was collected from the plots, and also from a check plot to evaluate runoff water quality. The scrape-haul method contributed more BOD load to runoff, and more fecal coliforms and nitrate to the soil than the irrigation or tank-wagon methods. At 10 to 21 tons waste applied annually on grassland there was not an appreciable deterioration of of runoff water quality nor buildup of soil nitrate. A two-stage lagoon system reduced BOD, 95%, COD, 93%, Kjeldahl-nitrogen, 82%, and fecal coliforms, 99%. |
