Abstract |
The term, 'waste minimization' is heard increasingly at meetings and conferences of individuals working in the field of hazardous waste management. Waste minimization is an umbrella term that includes the first two categories of the EPA's preferred hazardous waste management strategy which is shown below: source reduction: reduce the amount of waste at the source, through changes in industrial processes; recycling: reuse and recycle wastes for the original or some other purpose, such as materials recovery or energy production; incineration/treatment: destroy, detoxify, and neutralize wastes into less harmful substances; and secure land disposal: deposit wastes on land using volume reduction, encapsulation, leachate containment, monitoring, and controlled air and surface/subsurface waste releases. In carrying out its program to encourage the adoption of waste minimization, the Hazardous Waste Engineering Research Laboratory has supported the development of a recommended procedure for identifying waste minimization applications. The manual describes that procedure and will be of interest to those responsible for reducing waste streams, and to those interested in learning about waste minimization in general. |
