This report supplements the following two journal articles: (1) J. P. Killus and G. Z. Whitten, 'A Mechanism Describing the Photochemical Oxidation of Toluene in Smog,' Atmos. Environ., 16, 1973-1988 (1982) and (2) J. P. Killus and G. Z. Whitten, 'A New Carbon-Bond Mechanism,' submitted to Environ. Sci. Technol., 1982. The supplemental material contained in this report describes the computer modeling of smog chamber data performed in three stages. First, a mechanism was developed to describe the inorganic chemistry and the chemistries of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and PAN. Second, a series of mechanisms for specific compounds was added to the standard mechanism and experiments involving those compounds were simulated. Third, a study of the background reactivity of smog chambers and unpolluted tropospheric air was under taken to assess the biases inherent in smog chamber experiments and to supply information for use in atmospheric modeling studies. |
