Abstract | A joint study is described which was conducted to determine the sources of bacterial pollution in freshwater and estuarine portions of the Newport River in Carteret County, North Carolina near Moorehead City. The Newport River is an important shellfish producing area, some of which has been closed to shellfish harvesting since October 1969. The report is concerned with the levels of bacterial indicators in the Newport River estuary and tributaries and, where possible, identification of the probable sources of the indicators. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations presented as to means of controlling bacterial contamination in the Newport estuary. |
