Abstract |
This report summarizes and critically analyzes nutrient load-lake response relationships for 38 U.S. water bodies which have been intensively studied by 20 scientists participating in the OECD Eutrophication Program. It was determined that the Vollenweider nutrient load relationship involving mean depth, hydraulic residence time and phosphorus load correlated well with the trophic states assigned by the individual investigators. The relationships developed in this study can be used to predict the improvement in water quality that will result from a change in the phosphorus load to a water body for which phosphorus is the key chemical element limiting planktonic algal growth. |
