Abstract
The development of the reference summary of published information on nitrate occurrence in U.S. waters and related questions was undertaken in 1990 by the USDA Working Group on Water Quality. The summary is meant to provide the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) a broad perspective on the proportions of the problem of ground and surface water and estuary contamination associated with nitrate from agricultural sources. The formal assessment of water quality conditions is primarily the role of the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the Federal level and primarily on the States at the local level.
