Abstract |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Alaskan Bioremediation Project was initiated in the aftermath of the March 24, 1989, EXXON VALDEZ oil spill. The objective of the project was to demonstrate an alternative cleanup method for oil-contaminated shorelines based on enhancing natural biodegradation of the oil through the addition of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. The enhancement process is a well-recognized and scientifically sound approach to bioremediation but had never been tested on a large scale in marine environments. The project was managed by EPA's Office of Research and Development with financial, scientific, and logistical support from the Exxon Company USA under the authority of the Federal Technology Transfer Act. |
