Objective:
Exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with deleterious effects on the respiratory and cardiovascular system. This study investigates the role of PM in respiratory and cardiovascular systems in a cohort of boilermakers both with and without chronic bronchitis.
Approach:
This study was initiated by the Center in July 1999, under a previous EPA grant (Grant No. R824834C002), and data analysis is underway. A repeat-measurement design will monitor and assess several biological markers for exposure, such as heart rate variability, spirometry, and exhaled nitric oxide. A personal Dust Trak monitor will record PM2.5 levels continuously. Personal metal exposure (V, N, Cd, Mn, Cr, and Fe) will be measured daily. Workers during pre-exposure (layoff) served as their own controls. Subjects with chronic bronchitis were compared to non-symptomatic subjects.
Expected Results:
We expect to evaluate the effects of work time and non-work time data collected and find a relationship between healthier respiratory and cardiovascular function in non-work time data. We will examine the six metals collected on filter and heart rate variability effects, and on urine and heart rate variability effects.
