NUATRC's mission is to develop an environmental health research program on the public health risks posed by air toxics in urban atmospheres. The center's research program is focused on:
- Personal exposure determinations (measurements of actual exposures to air toxics by people living in urban environments).
- Use of biomarkers (health effect assessment in susceptible populations).
- Health effects research (clinical, toxicological and epidemiological studies). Initial research projects involved an assessment of research gaps related to the chemical and physical processes of asthma and the effect of air toxics on same.
- Improved specificity and sensitivity of biomarkers; and the use of passive monitors for short term personal exposures to selected air toxics.
The perspectives, information and conclusions conveyed in research project abstracts, progress reports, final reports, journal abstracts and journal publications convey the viewpoints of the principal investigator and may not represent the views and policies of ORD and EPA. Conclusions drawn by the principal investigators have not been reviewed by the Agency.
