Objective:
The overall objective of this research project is to measure polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ether levels, thyroid parameters, reproductive hormone levels, urinary iodine and hormone concentrations, and Hemoglobin A1C in 500 frequent and infrequent sport fish consumers. Based on the project findings, the specific objective of this research project is to determine whether there is an interaction between fish consumption and endocrine function.
Progress Summary:
The first phase of the study is almost complete. A screener questionnaire was mailed to a sample cohort of 3,695. Two hundred additional respondents, not previously contacted because of participation in another study, will be recruited as part of this first phase. As a result of a low response rate of 48 percent, a nonresponders survey was developed and administered to a sample of 524 nonresponders. These data are still to be delivered by the contractor and will be compared with responders.
The second phase of the study has begun. More than 600 respondents have volunteered to participate by providing blood and urine samples and completing a more detailed health status and fish consumption questionnaire. Laboratory analysis of the samples has begun as well with three separate laboratories conducting analysis for lipid levels, endocrine and thyroid function, and chemical contaminant levels.
Future Activities:
We will complete phase two of the data and specimen collection and continue having the three laboratories conduct blood and urine analysis. A subset of laboratory results, with Institutional Review Board approval, will be sent to respondents once all results are available.
Preliminary analysis of screener data will begin, as well as simple comparisons of fish consumption and health status data, with the original 1993-1994 study.
