RFA: Measurements and Modeling for Quantifying Air Quality and Climatic Impacts of Residential Biomass or Coal Combustion for Cooking, Heating, and Lighting (2012) RFA Text |  Recipients Lists
Research Category: Air Quality and Air Toxics , Climate Change , Tribal Environmental Health Research , Air

Objective:

The objectives of this project are to: (1) produce a global resource-driven map of current emissions and plausible interventions for all residential uses of solid fuel; (2) improve understanding of emission rates and emissions attributable to space heating by adding measurements to four existing residential-energy projects; (3) incubate a Regional Testing and Knowledge Center with community presence and demonstrate successive improvement in interventions; and (4) model relationships between emissions, outdoor concentrations, and global radiative forcing.

Progress Summary:

High resolution inventory with spatial constraints:

  • Developed a high resolution spatiotemporal emission inventory for the residential sector of India and analyzed potential emission reductions as a function of supply chain (LPG delivery) and distance from urban area.
  • Attributed increased winter fuel use in Nepalese homes to Completed sampling emissions and indoor air quality in Alaskan homes in Alaska, finding little difference in indoor air quality after stove replacement.
  • Designed and implemented new emission testing approach based on energy provided for end-use rather than stove/fuel combination in two winter studies in China.
  • Estimated “neighborhood effect” concentrations using computational fluid dynamics models; determined low sensitivity to home packing density, and high sensitivity to chimney height.

Future Activities:

Complete analysis of all emission samples; evaluate emission rates, indoor air quality, and their connections in Alaska homes; finalize seasonal emission manuscript from Nepal; complete generalizations on how ambient-emitted plumes affect neighborhood concentrations; compare global models of radiative forcing with multiple parameterizations.
