Objective:
Dartmouth is to fill critical gaps in our understanding of the role of drinking water and food borne exposure to arsenic (As) and potentially other contaminants in child growth, development and immune response. The Center will support multidisciplinary teams and innovative new technologies that are essential for conducting this research. It will support training and development of talented new investigators, including a Faculty Development Investigator and 3 other early career investigators, and will expedite connections among health care and public health providers, parents, caregivers and other key stakeholders to effectively reduce risk of environmental threats to children's health. To accomplish these goals, the Center comprises an interdisciplinary team of scientists committed to advancing knowledge through three interwoven studies and two integrative cores. Project 1 builds on an ongoing cohort study of pregnant women who use private wells in New Hampshire (NH). Offspring of these women will be evaluated for occurrence of infections, allergies/atopy and vaccine response in the first years of life. Effects of As on the developing microbiome also will be explored. Project 2 will investigate the contribution of diet to early childhood exposure to As. By quantifying all routes of exposure, the impact of As on children's growth and neurodevelopment will be assessed. Project 3 uses advanced techniques to examine epigenetic and gene expression alterations in the placenta in relation to As exposure and health outcomes. The Center leverages Dartmouth's strong institutional support and unique strengths in quantitative biomedical sciences, clinical biomedical informatics, trace element analysis, and genomic medicine. Critical research and translational activities will be integrated through the Administrative, Career Development and Research Integration Core and Community Outreach and Translation Core. Members include 10 health care providers (9 physicians and 1 nurse) who will be brought together by the Child Health Specialist. High-risk features associated with water sources in New Hampshire underscore the need to advance research in this area and to establish a comprehensive Center focused on emerging issues of potential concern to children globally. Establishing a Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research Center at Dartmouth will expedite research and translation of new discoveries into practice change and public health interventions, support cross disciplinary opportunities and innovative, impactful investigations, and promote careers of a new generation of investigators in children's environmental health research.
