Well-located, constructed, and maintained forest roads can minimize the major source of water pollution associated with silvicultural activities. A poorly designed road system can result in significant impacts such as increased sediment load reaching the stream; landslide debris flows; degraded aquatic habitat and fish and wildlife migration barriers; stream bank and streambed damage; altered and concentrated surface runoff; and increased maintenance costs.
