Abstract The objective of the Clean Water Act (as amended by the Water Quality Act of 1987, Public Law 100-4) is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation's waters. Each state has developed standards for water quality that are used to judge how well the objectives of the Clean Water Act are being achieved. The water quality standards consist of the designated beneficial uses of the water and the water quality criteria necessary for achieving and maintaining the beneficial uses.
