Abstract |
The site involves the city's single municipal well which supplies both the year-round and summer tourist populations. The well flumes collect ground water and lake water which are channeled into the system. Levels of TCE and PCE were detected in 1981, and have been gradually rising. Data available indicate that multiple sources of contamination are likely of historical origin at varying distances form the well. The cost-effective Initial Remedial Measure (IRM) selected for this site includes: provide a safe permanent drinking water supply through conventional treatment of water from Lake Michigan, and to conduct an RI/FS to evaluate potential sources of contamination and the hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer. This IRM represents the First Operable Unit. The capital cost for the IRM was estimated to be $1,954,000, with the O&M costs of $118,000. |
