Abstract 'Longwall stripping' is a new surface mining concept developed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Longwall stripping adapts existing underground longwall mining technology for use in recovering shallow cover coal without the total environmental disturbance often associated with surface mining. This study investigated the environmental, mining and economic feasibility of longwall stripping. Longwall stripping was determined to be a feasible method for mining coal under shallow cover. A discussion of the criteria that are necessary to consider in selecting a site and developing the mining plan is included. Additionally, alternate methods of the longwall stripping concept are discussed.
