Abstract |
Methyl isocyannate is highly toxic by both the peroral and skin penetration routs and presents a definite hazard to life by inhalation. Rabbit skin was necrosed by contact with the undiluted chemical while rabbit eyes were so severely damaged that this material must be placed in Grade 10. Methyl isocyanate presumably will be a sensitizing agent on human skin. Obviously, protective equipment should be used by those handling it since it is capable of causing serious injury or death by all portals of entry. If eye contact should occur, the eyes must be irrigated with water immediately. This treatment must be continued for at least 15 minutes and an ophthalmologist should be consulted as soon as possible. Methyl isocyanate appears to be the most toxic member of the isocyanate family. The commercially important toluene diisocyanate (Mondur TD-80) was studied recently by this laboratory - Report 26-42; 1963. An acute peroral LD50 of 6.17 (4.99 to 7.63) ml./kg. was obtained with this sample. Both methyl isocyanate and toluene isocyanate are known to be strong sensitizing agents. |
