Abstract The purpose of this fact sheet is to provide guidance to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), State, and contractor staff responsible for conducting Site Inspection Prioritizations (SIPs). Of the 36,000 sites currently in the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act Information System (CERCLIS) inventory, approximately 16,700 have undergone Site Inspections (SIs). Of those, however, over 6,000 sites still require final site disposition decisions. This backlog has made it difficult for EPA to evaluate sites efficiently on a worst sites first basis. Consequently, EPA established the SIP to address this backlog and to make decisions on these sites.
