Abstract |
A three-year field study was conducted in 1969-1971 to assess the relationship of Kraft mill effluent and pre-impoundment water quality to adult steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson) behavior in the Snake River, Idaho-Washington. Steelhead were tagged with ultrasonic tags and followed through a 25 km section of the proposed Lower Granite Reservoir. Limnological parameters and compared with fish behavior. No significant correlation could be made between any chemical water quality parameter and steelhead behavior. However, as temperature dropped below 15C fish movement slowed, fish generally stopped moving at night, and resting periods increased in length and number. Steelhead showed a preference to move in water with off-bottom current velocities of 0.2 to 0.5 m/sec and showed a definite pattern of crossover and resting points. |
