Abstract |
The objective of the report is to discuss factors that are important to the development of criteria for suspended matter in the water column. Since the interest is in criteria for suspended matter in general, regardless of origin, no distinction is made between wastewater solids, commonly referred to as 'suspended solids,' and suspended matter of other origin, such as erosion or channel scour, which is often referred to as 'suspended sediment.' Water quality criteria typically specify concentrations in the water column that will protect aquatic life from adverse effects. First, a water column concentration for solids would provide protection from possible adverse physical effects on the biota, but would not necessarily protect against possible chemical effects due to toxics sorbed to the solids particles. |
