Abstract |
In January 1980, the Special Pesticide Review Division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Pesticides and Toxic Substances initiated the 'Forest Use Chemicals Project', the objective of which was to develop guidance for the timber production industry and the public on the comparative risks and benefits associated with various chemical and non-chemical approaches to pest control in timber management. The report includes information on biodegradation and persistence of various pesticides in plant, air, soil and water environments, and on their potential hazard to non-target plants and organisms. The environmental fate and impact data presented in this document, in combination with estimates of potential for human exposure (e.g., due to drift from aerial applications) and animal/human toxicity data, provide the data base for assessing potential risks associated with the use of a specific pesticide. |
