Abstract Current and projected used of coal have resulted in several proposals for coal slurry pipelines in the United States. A typical eastern coal has a greater sulfur content and a smaller percentage of alkaline minerals in the ash than a typical western coal. Thus, eastern coal slurries likely will yield different quality wastewaters from western coal slurries. An experimental program was conducted to characterize the wastewater resulting from a 50 percent eastern Kentucky coal slurry. Twenty-nine water quality parameters were measured as a function of pumping time in the pilot scale pipeline. Tests were conducted with and without a nitrite-based corrosion inhibitor added directly to the slurry. The treatability of the 10-day slurry wastewater was assessed using both lime and alum addition.
