Abstract The Office of Radiation Programs, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (ORP/EPA) has prepared this analysis as technical support for EPA's proposed environmental radiation protection standards, 40 CFR 191, concerning the management and disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. For Subpart A of 40 CFR 191, waste management and storage operations, EPA proposes to extend the limitations of 40 CRR 190 to these operations. EPA/ORP developed a generic high-level liquid waste solidification plant and assessed the potential environmental impact of atmospheric discharges during normal operations in four solidification processes: fluidized-bed calcination, spray calcination and glassification by in-can melting and continuous melting. The authors used a newly developed computer code, AIRDOS-EPA, to perform the assessment.
