Abstract |
The recent Michigan incident, in which livestock feed was contaminated by polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), prompted this investigation. This report reviews the technical and commercial history of PBBs and also gives a general overview of the production, consumption and ultimate fate of these compounds. A detailed discussion of the manufacturing process and consumption patterns identifies possible points of entry of PBBs into the environment. A summary of air emissions, and the technology involved is discussed; and the ultimate disposal of liquid and solid waste material was investigated. Finally, a cost/performance analysis of alternative flame retardant is presented. |
