Abstract | A study was conducted of the coal mines in Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota using remote sensing data from Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS). The study documented the size, shape and location of the actively mined area, untouched spoils piles, reclaimed or recontoured areas, newly vegetated areas and abandoned spoils piles within each of the 30 active, inactive or proposed coal mine sites. Land use, or classification, at each mine evaluated was defined by computer processing of ERTS data from digital magnetic tapes. In most cases the computer classification techniques were successful in delineating mine areas, particularly large areas, into active mining and revegetated spoils areas, and graded and ungraded spoils piles. |
