Abstract | This report presents results of a study to determine the removal efficiencies of three common home-use pesticides from the skin with human saliva and artificial saliva substitutes. Three popular residential pesticides (chlorpyrifos, pyrethrin I, and piperonyl butoxide) were tested at microgram levels on volunteer participants' hands. Each was found to be removed with approximately 50% efficiency by cotton gauze moistened with either human saliva, an artificial mucin-based dental saliva, or a 1.3% aqueous dioctylsulfosuccinate (DSS) surfactant. The DSS-moistened wipe may remove pyrethrin I and piperonyl butoxide from hands with slightly greater efficiency than wipes moistened with human or artificial saliva. This efficiency of removal is believed to approximate the efficiency of removal of pesticide residues from the skin of infants and toddlers by mouthing activity. |
