Abstract |
Experiments were conducted in the field and laboratory in Southern California to determine the effects of heavy black asphaltic Santa Barbara crude oil on the intertidal barnacle Chthamalus fissus. Observations were also made on surfaces in the Santa Barbara Channel oiled following the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. The data presented support the original hypothesis that this type of oil acts as a black body. It is this 'black body' effect which has a long term influence on Chthamalus fissus distribution after the oil has developed a hard surface crust. |
