Abstract |
The report describes waste minimization practices within Standard Industry Classification (SIC) Code 3069 (Fabricated Rubber Products Not Elsewhere Classified). Standardized waste minimization audit techniques were applied to three important and distinct manufacturing processes: rubber thread; rubber molding; and rubber to metal bonding. Project data were compiled from several sources including: literature, site visits, meetings with management, government agencies, trade associations, and equipment vendors. The result is a comprehensive description of common production practices and waste streams. Pollution prevention options are judged for technical and economic feasibility. Recommendations emphasize low technology supervisory initiatives requiring limited capital expenditure and include: housekeeping, equipment maintenance and employee training. The report recommends that Federal and State agencies actively promote industry participation in technology transfer and research and development, as mandated by the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990. |
