Abstract | Invertebrate drift, the downstream displacement of benthic animals inhabiting eroding substrates is a naturally occurring process in streams. Changes in the quality and quantity of drift may be sufficiently well correlated with changes in the kind and abundance of individuals living on the stream bottom to provide a sensitive indicator of ecosystem change. In order to clarify the function of drift in invertebrate populations and determine the feasibility of drift as a monitor tool, the study investigates the relation between drift density and food level in artificial streams, drift density relations in a natural stream system, and the fate of drift in pools. |
