Abstract | Contemporary environmental legislation such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 and the Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act of 1986 emphasize the reduction of risk of damage to the environment and human health as the basis of environmental management. There is a hierarchy of approaches to risk reduction including source control, reuse and recycle, treatment and exposure minimization. Recent examples of these approaches, which were evaluated by the Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory, are presented including: Superfund innovative technology demonstrations, waste reduction techniques, protective clothing and an expert system to assess risk. |
