Abstract | Tear samples were collected from 358 volunteers in Southern California in smog polluted areas. No consistent variation of lysozyme concentration with oxidant concentration was demonstrated. Subjects exposed to .19 ppm of oxidant in the open air did show decreased lysis. A threshold effect is possible. No correlation was established between lysis and mild subjective complaints of irritation. Objective indications of eye irritation show a mild decrease in lysis levels. |
