A project was conducted to demonstrate the adequacy of magnesia base wet scrubbing to remove essentially all of the particulates and most of the sulfur dioxide from pulverized coal furnaces. Side effects such as sulfate formation, NO(x) absorption, and scrubber operability were to be determined. A wet scrubbing pilot plant which consisted of a venturi-type particulate scrubber, a venturi-type absorber, and a tray-type absorber was designed and constructed. Over 100 short term tests were performed to determine the most satisfactory operating conditions for each scrubber. The results indicate that the magnesia base wet scrubbing process is superior to other wet processes known to be under development for abatement of both particulates and SO2 from coal-fired furnaces.
